The Cosa Active/Junior, a hip abduction orthosis, can be worn from childhood into adulthood. Scissor gait (also called crouch gait) is typically seen in various types of infantile cerebral palsy; this orthosis prevents crossing of the knees and allows for more stable standing and sitting thanks to the abduction pads.
For all users of this orthosis, the improved pelvic symmetry, improved trunk control, and increased freedom of knee movement supports a more physiological gait. Users of all ages will need to expend less energy to cover greater distances while wearing the Cosa Active/Junior. For patients in wheelchairs, wearing this orthosis will not only gain a wider seating position, but also gain greater freedom for their hands, making it easier to eat, play, write, or use electronic devices.
The orthosis can also be easily worn with lower leg orthoses such as an AFOs. The Cosa Active/Junior is also helpful for wheelchair users, as the orthosis makes additional wheelchair abductors unnecessary.
The Cosa Active and the Cosa Junior improve torso control and stabilise standing and sitting via abduction pads placed between the thighs. Mobility is increased through reduction of scissor gait also called crouch gait (spastic crossing of the legs), this freedom of knee movement results in an improved gait pattern.
Made from a breathable, soft material this orthosis ensures a high level of wearer comfort. The fixed position straps aid in making this hip abduction orthosis a customized solution stitched specifically to each individual patient. The Cosa Active has an additional benefit of a zipper for easy donning and doffing (zipper is not available in the Cosa Junior).
A combination of possibilities
Lower leg orthoses can be easily combined with the Cosa Active/Junior in order to stabilise the gait pattern. The orthosis makes additional wheelchair abductors unnecessary, as the abduction pads provide a wider sitting base when the user is seated.
Suitable for day or night-time wear
The Cosa Active/Junior can be worn during the day and at night due to the breathable fabric. This can help to prevent the knees from rubbing together at night.
The Cosa Active/Junior can be easily washed in the machine at 40°C, it is recommended that this orthosis is washed within a wash bag. The abductor pads should be removed while the shorts are being washed. This orthosis cannot be placed in the drying machine.
The Cosa hip abduction orthosis line from Ottobock includes the Cosa Junior, for children up to children’s size 116, and the Cosa Active, for children size 128 and above and adults.
The mechanism of action, functional principle and external appearance of both orthoses are identical.
Unlike the Cosa Junior, the Cosa Active has a zipper and is available in sizes from children’s size 128 to unisex size L (women’s 46 and men’s 54).
